Men’s Fashion: Tips For Staying Cool In The Office

Men’s Fashion: Tips For Staying Cool In The Office

One of the main problems with professional dress codes is that they are not always mindful of workplace conditions. The traditional three-piece suit might be fine all year round if you live in London; Arizona summers, on the other hand, are not as forgiving of such attire.

Dressing in professional clothes offers many benefits; not only is it a likely requirement of your workplace, but such clothing is designed to make you appear confident, clean, and polished. The problem is that the heat of the summer works against such aims. It’s rare to find someone who, dressed to the nines, isn’t also drowning in sweat.

Tips For Staying Cool In The Office

But fear not! There are still options available to keep men cool in the summer without sacrificing their professional wardrobes. Here are some tips:

Wear Light Colors

A black suit is death in the summer. The color absorbs light and heats up very quickly under direct (or even indirect) sun. The only way to logically counter this is to opt for lighter-colored suits. While some men might feel uncomfortable wearing flamboyant colors, most will find that gray or even a lighter blue to be agreeable options. White slacks or dress pants are also a good idea, so long as they have a looser fit. Tight white pants rarely look good on people.

Wear Light Fabrics

Just as important, if not more so, is the kind of fabric you wear. Polyester and rayon trap heat in your body more than nearly any other material, so knowing which fabrics will keep you cool can make all the difference. Cotton is a great option due to its natural drying properties, strength, and durability – though it should be noted that cotton does tend to wrinkle. Another good summer fabric is seersucker, which has cotton in it, and forms a very breathable fabric. Linen suits are also known for being light and airy, though expensive.

Consider A Deconstructed Jacket

Lining is only a hindrance in the summer and is sure to add to your sweaty discomfort. Therefore, opt for coats with minimal or no lining whatsoever. Without an added layer of fabric, jackets breath better and are less unpleasant to wear in the office. The problem with unlined jackets is that they can lose their shape without the lining, so half-lined might be a preferable middle ground. These jackets only have half lining in the top, enough to keep their shape, but none in the bottom, making their chest and abdomen less confined.

Choose The Right Footwear

When the heat starts to mount, men generally don’t have as many footwear options as women, who can wear open-toed sandals in the workplace (so long as they are work appropriate). Men are generally discouraged from wearing sandals in the workplace, so those who want to keep cool have to investigate other options. Sockless shoes actually tend to be best in these situations, so boat shoes, moccasins, and Italian loafers are your best bets.

Have A Change Of Clothes On Hand

If you’re worried about keeping a clean, professional look, it’s always a good idea to invest in a backup set of clothes. This is particularly important if you tend to sweat a lot, even when not sitting under the sun. A handy change of clothes will ensure you have something to fall back on if you end up drenched in a puddle of perspiration. Be sure your backup outfit is made out of the same breathable, lightweight material as your original outfit to ensure maximum comfort.

Office Fashion: What Do I Wear To Work In The Winter?

Office Fashion: What Do I Wear To Work In The Winter?

It’s winter. That means snow, ice, salt, and cold. It also means wearing your favorite work heels to walk to work isn’t really realistic. So, what’s a girl to do? We brought in fashion expert Ashley Poulin of SharpHeels.com to answer your biggest questions on office fashion. Today’s question is, “What do I wear to work in the winter?”

Fashion Challenge: Professionals who don’t know how to simultaneously dress for inclement weather AND the office. For example, if you can’t wear snow boots and oversized sweaters to the office  – and you really can’t, without getting lots of startled glances – how do you dress for both a snowstorm and a “business professional” dress code?

SharpHeels Style Guideline

Winter weather is tough… you want to be warm, but you also want to look stylish. You can do both.

Check out the quick tips below or watch the video!

Winter Wardrobe Essentials

  • “The” Winter Coat – The first and most important priority is to invest in a good Winter coat.
  • Additional Necessities :
    • Gloves – black leather winter gloves with cashmere lining for extra warmth.  There are also some great microfiber options that look like leather, but are less expensive.
    • Black Skinny Pants or even consider black skinny jeans (depending on the office dress code) – skinny pants hug your body and keep you warm.  You can also add tights or even long johns under them for an extra layer of warmth.
    • Boots that can last the elements or swap out your winter boots for office heels when you get to your desk.
      • Note – Invest in a couple pairs of sleek, not hefty, dress boots that can be worn out in the elements and at the office
      • Even better: Buy a large workbag that you can put your heels in, then switch them out at the office.
    • Cashmere Sweater – nothing can replace the warmth of a 100% cashmere sweater.  It’s worth the investment.
    • Long Johns – In the coldest of winter days add a pair of tight (form fitting) long johns that you can wear under your skinny pants.  They will added a wonderful extra layer of warmth and no one will ever know you’re wearing them
    • Cashmere Scarf – scarves keep your neck warm and they also add a little color to your otherwise toned down winter wardrobe.  Use the scarf for both warm and color.
    • Wool Socks – buys a couple pairs of fun wool socks.  They’ll keep your toes warm and give you a smile at the end of the long day
  • We’ll also show you some of our favorite coats – pea coats and synched waste coats that will make you look great on your way to the office in the fall and winter months.

5 Office Fashion Tricks On A Tight Budget

5 Office Fashion Tricks On A Tight Budget

When you’ve got a tight budget, making a fashion statement at the office can seem impossible. However, there are some simple (and cheap!) alternatives to spending a small fortune on clothes.

We got some tips and tricks from Sophie Wood, editor of Workchic.com, on how to build an awesome work wardrobe on the cheap.

1. Mix & Match

Before hitting up the mall, take another look at what you have at home. Chances are you already have tons of great, work-friendly clothes in your closet! It’s worth taking a peek; you might be pleasantly surprised at what you will find.

“The more you can master the art of mixing and matching your wardrobe, the further your fashion dollars will stretch,” said Woods.

She suggests mixing casual and dressy items. Try something you wouldn’t normally pair together! You could try wearing a T-shirt with trousers or anorak over a pencil dress, for example.

2. Layer It

Before you pack up your summer clothes for the season, see if you can salvage any pieces for work. Perhaps you should try a little layering – For example, you could layer a short sleeve top or sleeveless dress over a long sleeve blouse.

Whatever you decide to do, Woods encourages thinking outside the box. “How about creating a brand new outfit by wearing a skirt over a dress?” she said. “See, all it takes is a little creativity.”

3. Use The Power Of Accessories

Because they are generally pretty inexpensive, accessories are a great way to spice up any penny pincher’s wardrobe. Not only that, but little additions like jewelry or scarves can completely change an outfit and make it pop with personality.

“Adding a scarf or belt adds new life to classic pieces from shift dresses to cardigans,” Wood said. “A statement necklace can completely transform the most basic tops!”

4. Shoot For Quality Over Quantity

If you absolutely have to go out and purchase new clothes for the office, don’t cheap out on the quality.

“Even on a budget, choose quality over quantity,” said Woods. “Instead of buying cheap clothes that fall apart after one wash, go for quality designer fashion on sale that will last you much longer.”

She suggests checking out designer discount shops like Yoox, Issay, and Last Call for great clothes at great prices.

“Take advantage of extra promos where you can get an additional discount on already reduced items,” she said, “that’s where you save BIG!”

5. Think Versatile

Again, if you must buy new clothes, think about how versatility of each item. How many different outfits can you create with this article of clothing?

“When it comes to versatility, neutral colors and classic shapes are your best bet,” said Woods. “Good examples are suit separates, crisp button down shirts, [and] scoop neck tees (in different colors). Each of the pieces are guaranteed to get multiple wears by easily matching with other items.”

4 Fashion Tricks For Your Next Interview

4 Fashion Tricks For Your Next Interview

Although your appearance is not the most important thing in a job interview, applying too much makeup or having the wrong accessories can hurt your chances of getting the job.

Interview Fashion Tricks

Here are four tips to consider before your next interview.

1. Wear Something You’re Confident In

First of all, if you never wear a dress, costume, or skirt in your leisure time, you should not start wearing one for an interview. There are also fashionable business clothes from Lipsy London out there if that’s more your style. During an interview, it’s always better to stay true to yourself since you are very excited (and sometimes even insecure).

2. Find The Right Shoes

Feel as comfortable as possible – even if it’s a challenge to find the right shoes for a job interview. They should neither make you nor your legs extremely long, as you want to convince with your skills and not your looks, right? (And twisting your ankle when stepping into the office might not be the most professional look, so just keep it on the down low.)

3. Dress Like Your Future Colleagues

If you don’t know if a business suit and heeled shoes will be the right choice, sit down in a nearby café a couple of days before your interview and take a look at your (hopefully) future colleagues – what are they wearing? Is there any fashion trap you might step into with your choice so far?

4. Don’t Wear Too Much Makeup

When it comes to makeup and accessories, you should use as much as necessary but as little as possible – everything distracting the interviewer from your personality and skills might end in some attempts to flirt, but surely not in a serious conversation or labor contract afterwards.

Of course – nobody should ever take a wedding ring off and if you have skin problems because of pimples, you will surely feel better using some light concealer. But there is no need for smokey eyes and pink lip gloss, so just underline your natural beauty a bit without exaggerating the usage of your vanity case.

So, good luck for the next interview – keep in mind to stay true to yourself and you will not have to blame yourself afterwards if it goes wrong, because then the company did a mistake!

Stand Out With Style: 3 Tips For Boosting Your Personal Brand

Stand Out With Style: 3 Tips For Boosting Your Personal Brand

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” —Miuccia Prada

Your personal brand reflects who you are, what you stand for, and what you do. Your personal style is a great way to express these things. So, why do women feel uncomfortable using fashion as a business tool?

Even in this day and age, women are still wrestling with the idea that being interested in fashion as a professional business woman is frivolous (or even dangerous).

“I see it going on all the time, women dressing down, blending in, and looking and becoming anonymous,” said Kristina Moore, Founder and Editor of CorporateFashionista.com. “We’re so much better than that!”

Why It’s Important To Stand Out With Style

“It has never been more important [for a woman] to differentiate herself from the pack,” said Moore. “Fashion is an extremely effective business tool in today’s marketplace.”

Having a fashion-forward appearance allows you to express your individuality through your style, allowing you to instantly communicate and reinforce your personal brand as a professional.

“Today’s professional woman has to invent herself,” said Moore. “There is no model or mirror that’s going to reflect back to her, her identity.”

Tips For Expressing Your Style (And Brand)

Even under the strictest of dress codes, even small personal style statements can have a profound positive impact on the job. Don’t let your personality and potential get lost in a sea of pantsuits. Check out these tips for standing out and embracing your inner fashionista:

1. Figure Out Who You Are

Knowing who you are is hugely important when determining how to present yourself as a brand. After all, how can you sell yourself to an employer or potential client without knowing exactly what you stand for?

In his article, “How To Create A Personal Brand Without Being A Jerk,” Joshua Waldman presents a great way to determine your brand:

  • Think about three emotional words that best describe you (or, three adjectives you’d like to be described as). Write them down.
  • Then, think about what colors and images best represent those words.

Now, look at your clothes, shoes, accessories, and so on – Do they reflect your brand? If not, it might be worth a wardrobe update.

“Develop your personal dress style, appearance, and image that consistently screams what you are about,” writes Deborah Shane in her article, “How To Be Memorable: Develop Your Unique Brand Style.”

2. Have A Signature Look Or Style

Aside from your awesome experience and pleasant demeanor, what will set you apart from the suits? What will people remember about you? What do you want people to remember about your appearance?

Not sure what to wear? Here are a few ideas:

  • Wear an eye-catching piece of jewelry to jumpstart a conversation at a networking event.
  • Quickly capture your audience by wearing a personally flattering color at your next pitch meeting.
  • Wear modern, on-trend business appropriate outfits to visually send the message that you are an innovative and progressive professional.

3. Get Inspired

Need help getting inspired? Pinterest is a great place to get style ideas. It’s like the ultimate window shopping experience – from the comfort of your couch!

There are TONS of great outfits and looks to work off of on Pinterest. Simply scroll down through the Fashion category (they have men’s and women’s) and see what you can find. Or, you can check out CAREEREALISM’s board, Career Style for Women (we have a men’s fashion board, too!).

So, instead of reaching for the same old, bland shoes or blouses, try something different. Define yourself and reinforce your brand!

“When professional women look good, they feel good,” said Moore, “and when they feel good, they’re unstoppable.”

3 Reasons Why You MUST Update Your Work Wardrobe

3 Reasons Why You MUST Update Your Work Wardrobe

Does your work wardrobe need an update? Well, if you want to make any big career moves, you might want to consider it.

You might love that 10-year-old blouse or those pants you can barely squeeze into, but unfortunately, those pieces aren’t doing you any favors for your career.

According to Lois Joy Johnson in her book, The Wardrobe Wakeup, it’s extremely important to stay on top of style trends.

“Like it or not, it’s a younger working world,” writes Johnson. “Address your ‘packaging’ or look out of touch!”

It’s true. According to a study, over half of the women surveyed admitted that they judge their female colleagues based on what they wear to work.

Johnson’s advice?

“Rethink your clothes, get over your past, and dress for now,” Johnson writes.

Why You MUST Update Your Work Wardrobe

Here are three compelling reasons to keep your work wardrobe fresh and fab:

1. It Makes You Stand Out (In A Good Way)

Yes, wearing shoulder pads to an interview will definitely make you stand out, but not in a good way (so please, dear God, don’t do it).

Within three minutes of meeting your interviewer, you need to give off a positive impression. Having an updated look is a great way to boost your chances.

2. It Shows That You’re Up-To-Date

Remember, you’re competing with younger candidates for that job or promotion. You need to look relevant and ready, so you need to pay attention what’s trending.

“Updated clothes and polished style wrap your skills and abilities in a modern package,” Johnson writes. “Staying current keeps you in the game.”

3. It Says A Lot About You

The way you dress for work says a lot about your self-esteem, your attitude towards life and your body, and your respect for your job, according to Johnson.

That means, with the wrong clothes, you could give off the wrong vibe, which could hurt your chances at getting a job or promotion.

So, make sure your clothes…

Fit Correctly – A poor fit can make even models look frumpy or cheap. PLEASE make sure your clothes fit well. (Even if that means buying things in the next size up or spending the money to get things tailored.)

Are Age Appropriate – Yes, it’s important to keep your look updated, however, it’s also important to dress your age. Remember, trying to look too youthful can hurt your brand just as badly as an outdated look.

Are YOU! – It’s important to add a little personality to your look. Are you bold? Wear a bold print skirt with a dark top. Find out what colors, patterns, designs, and so on, speak to you and figure out how you can work them into your wardrobe appropriately.

Make You Feel Like A Million Bucks – When you dress in clothes that make you look good, you feel good! You’ll feel more confident, fresh, and trendy – and everyone will notice!

Beauty Tips: Professional Interview Makeup

Beauty Tips: Professional Interview Makeup

Over the past nine-plus years, I have interviewed hundreds of job seekers. The ones that I remember most are those that presented poorly.

  • The woman wearing perfume that literally made me ill.
  • The man who had used “hair-in-a-can” (Yes, he had spray-painted his bald scalp black!).
  • And the woman who, forgive me, had put on so much makeup that I thought she was applying for the position of circus clown.

As far as I am concerned, rule number one is no perfume, cologne, aftershave, or scented anything. You might think you smell good, but if the interviewer’s stomach is churning, it’s going to be a short interview.

Rule number two is only a minimal amount of makeup. But, I’m a man, so what do I know about makeup?

Therefore, I asked New York makeup artist Ewelina Krupinska what she advises women to wear – makeup-wise – on an interview.

“A woman’s makeup can be an important factor in an interview, so important, that it should not be ignored,” she said. “Everyone has a different perception of what makes them look presentable, but there are some universal rules. First, you should not use your ‘everyday’ makeup. Remember, you are meeting a potential employer. While your makeup does not have to be ‘natural,’ it should not be too dramatic. You have to take into consideration the corporate culture and the position for which you are applying. Mimic women who are in the position.”

Of course, the question is, How can you find that out? It may be as simple as looking at the company’s annual report or website. If you can’t find any photos, if feasible, go to the company at the start of a workday and see what the women are wearing. Even if you don’t know who’s who, you will know what the corporate culture dictates.

But back to Ms. Krupinska.

“As for women who don’t regularly wear makeup, and who think they don’t need to, think again,” she said. “You have to consider your competition and you don’t want an employer thinking that you don’t take pride in your appearance.”

“So, use some concealer and a bit of foundation to cover any imperfections (like a pimple or a blemish),” she advised. “If you don’t know how to properly apply makeup, department stores offer the service for a nominal fee.”

“Just remember,” she concludes, “stay professional.”

5 Quick And Easy Beauty Tricks For Busy Professionals

5 Quick And Easy Beauty Tricks For Busy Professionals

As a busy professional, you don’t have time in the morning to doll yourself up for the day, so keeping up your appearance can be a challenge (especially if you have a family to take care of before work!).

So, do you resort to waking up earlier or do you  skip maintenance all together?

You don’t have to do either!

These five quick beauty tips are easy and doable for any woman – no matter how busy!

What are your favorite sources for beauty tricks?

1. Prep The Night Before

Go ahead, hit the snooze button one more time! Before you head to bed, paint your nails, do a facial, or trim your bangs. Not only is it a nice way to unwind at the end of a long work day, but it will help you wake up refreshed and ready to go.

2. Get Brighter Teeth With Lipstick

Kiss those dull teeth goodbye and trick everyone into thinking you have a new set of pearly whites! Try lipsticks with blue undertones. Shades that accentuate your smile include wines, burgundies, and berries.

3. Put Your Moisturizer In The Fridge

Puffy eyes? No problem! Leave some moisturizer in your fridge and use it when you wake up in the morning. The coolness helps get rid of swelling and inflammation, so say goodbye to puffiness!

4. Rinse With Carbonated Water

If frizzy hair is a major problem for you, try this weird (but easy) remedy. Because of its low pH level, carbonated water is a great frizz-reducer. This quick fix is especially helpful in the summer when it’s sticky and humid.

5. Tame Unruly Eyebrows With Hairspray

Hairspray is a wonderful thing (when used in moderation!). Spritz a little bit of hairspray on an old toothbrush then comb your eyebrows for a polished, eye-popping look.

Beauty Emergency Kit For The Smart Professional Woman

Beauty Emergency Kit For The Smart Professional Woman

We all have those days that we just don’t look best. (You know, those days you slept in and couldn’t shower before work, or those mornings after a red-eye flight.)

When you’re a busy professional on the go, it can be tough to keep up a put-together look. But it’s important to always look your best – no matter what the circumstance. Here are some items you should keep in your beauty emergency kit:

This one is a given – Always keep concealer in your kit to cover up surprise pimples or dreary dark circles.

Grease happens – sometimes you can’t help it. And, if you have bangs, grease can make you look 10x more gross than usual. For a quick fix, pop in a headband to get that dirty hair off your face.

Deodorant Sponges

Don’t you just love it when you put on your blouse and it has a huge deodorant patch on it? Me either. Be sure to keep some deodorant sponges in your bag, especially if you’re traveling.

Safety Pins

Things rip, come undone, and don’t stay where they need to be. Keep a couple of mini safety pins in your bag in case a strap pops.

Makeup Remover Wipes

I know… that speech was moving – so much that it moved your mascara from your lashes to your cheeks. Not attractive unless you’re at a Dashboard Confessional concert, ladies. Keep a small to-go pack of wipes in case you need to go freshen up your face.

Touch Up Makeup Kit

Turns out, your lipstick loved your wine glass more than your lips. Not only that, but your allergies flared up, so you’ve been rubbing your eyes all night. Keep a small makeup kit on hand in case you need to reapply and touch up areas.

Spare Pair Of Earrings

I can’t stand it when I forget earrings, or worse, lose one. I always have a spare pair in my bag in case of emergencies. Make sure this pair is versatile, so it can go with whatever you’re wearing.

Physiological changes, low relative humidity, vitamin deficiency, choline inhibitors, and adverse effects of medication result to this condition.

The treatment:

2. Dark Spots

Getting rid of freckles and dark spots immediately after summer is one heck of a task. During summer, our body releases excess melanin and acts as a protective element harmful ultraviolet radiation. 3. Swelling Around The Eyes

Fatigue and age plays a prominent role when it comes to swelling around eyes or puffy eyes. The major reason for cause is fluid retention and swelling in tissues. Other key factors which stimulates this condition include:

  • Fluid retention and swelling is also encouraged by regular consumption of alcohol, caffeine and other drugs.
  • Dermatitis, a common skin disorder might trigger and pave way to swelling of eyes.
  • Improper functioning of tear glands can also leads to this condition

The treatment:

Using natural astringent like sliced strawberries and grated potatoes. Above all, perfect diet with regular intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits will provide an efficient solution.

The most undeniable and pesky problem faced by human race is body odor. It can be due to climate, psychological conditions, and certain diseases.
